The Bhagavad Gita, also known as the Gita, is a sacred Hindu text that has been a source of inspiration for many people for thousands of years. Its teachings on duty, action, and self-realization have been an integral part of Indian culture and have had a profound influence on the development of Indian society and politics. In this essay, we will explore the concept of the Gita in the Indian constitution and democracy, including examples of shlokas from the Gita and articles of the Indian constitution.
The Gita and Indian Society:
The Bhagavad Gita is an ancient Indian text that is part of the epic Mahabharata. It is a dialogue between Lord Krishna and Arjuna, a warrior prince who is about to go to war against his own relatives. The Gita is set on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, and it deals with the central question of how to live a meaningful life in a world of conflict and suffering.

The Gita emphasizes the importance of performing one’s duties without attachment to the results of those actions. The concept of duty or dharma is central to Hinduism, and the Gita teaches that each person has a unique duty to perform in life, based on their station in life, their abilities, and their temperament. The Gita also teaches that one should perform these duties selflessly, without seeking personal gain or glory.

The Gita teaches that action is necessary in life, but it should be performed with detachment. This means that one should not be attached to the results of one’s actions, whether they are success or failure, pleasure or pain, praise or criticism. This detachment is necessary because it frees the mind from the distractions of the world and allows one to focus on one’s duty.

The Gita also teaches that self-realization or spiritual enlightenment is the ultimate goal of life. It teaches that one should cultivate a spiritual practice that helps one to realize the true nature of the self and the universe. This realization leads to a state of peace and freedom from suffering.
The Gita and Indian Politics:
The teachings of the Gita have had a profound influence on Indian politics and society. Many Indian leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, have been inspired by the Gita and its teachings on duty, action, and self-realization. Gandhi saw the Gita as a guide to moral and spiritual action, and he often quoted from it in his speeches and writings.

The Gita’s teachings on duty and selflessness have also influenced Indian politics. The concept of duty or dharma is an important part of the Indian constitution, and it is reflected in the duties and responsibilities of citizens and leaders. The Indian constitution also emphasizes the importance of selflessness and public service, and it encourages citizens to work for the welfare of society.
Examples of Shlokas from the Gita:
Let us now look at some examples of shlokas from the Gita that have influenced Indian politics and society.

1. “Karmanye vadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana” (Chapter 2, Verse 47)
This shloka is one of the most famous verses of the Gita, and it is often quoted in Indian society and politics. It means “You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action.” This shloka emphasizes the importance of performing one’s duty without attachment to the results of those actions.

2. “Yoga karmasu kaushalam” (Chapter 2, Verse 50)
This shloka means “Yoga is skill in action.” It emphasizes the importance of performing one’s duty with skill and efficiency, without being distracted by the results of those actions.

3. “Uddharet atmanatmanatmanam” (Chapter 6, Verse 5)
This shloka means “One should elevate oneself by one’s own mind, not degrade oneself. The mind is the friend of the one who has control over it, and the mind is the enemy of the one who is unable to control it.” This shloka highlights the importance of controlling one’s mind and cultivating a positive mental attitude in order to achieve spiritual and personal growth.

4. “Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati bharata, Abhyutthanam adharmasya tadatmanam srijamyaham” (Chapter 4, Verse 7)
This shloka means “Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion—at that time I descend Myself.” This shloka emphasizes the importance of upholding dharma or righteous conduct and the role of divine intervention in restoring order to the world when dharma is threatened.
The Indian Constitution and the Gita:
The Indian constitution is a secular document that was adopted on January 26, 1950, and it is based on the principles of democracy, equality, and social justice. The constitution provides for a parliamentary system of government and a federal system of governance, with power shared between the central government and the states.

The Indian constitution also reflects the influence of the teachings of the Gita. The concept of duty or dharma is reflected in Article 51A, which outlines the fundamental duties of citizens. These duties include respecting the Constitution, promoting harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood among all people, and striving towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity.

Article 14 of the Indian constitution guarantees equality before the law and prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion, race, caste, sex, or place of birth. This article reflects the Gita’s teachings on the equality of all beings and the importance of treating everyone with respect and dignity.

Article 25 of the Indian constitution guarantees the freedom of conscience and the right to profess, practice, and propagate any religion. This article reflects the Gita’s teachings on the importance of spiritual practice and the freedom to choose one’s own path to self-realization.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita have had a profound influence on Indian society and politics. The Gita’s teachings on duty, action, and self-realization have influenced Indian leaders and inspired them to work for the welfare of society. The Gita’s teachings on equality, freedom, and spiritual practice are reflected in the Indian constitution and provide a framework for democratic governance and social justice. As such, the Gita remains an enduring source of inspiration and guidance for people in India and around the world.
