On December 17,2015, Karnataka High Court, mandated the “2bin1bag” be adopted by all waste generators in Namma Bengaluru.
What is “2bin1bag” method of waste segregation?
What is “2bin1bag” method of waste segregation?
“2bin1bag” consists of one Green-bin , Red-bin , and Bag.
Green bin for kitchen waste (vegetable and fruit peels and food waste)
Red bin for reject waste (Sanitary waste) and
Bag for Dry waste (Plastic, paper, etc).
“2bin1bag” aims at the segregation of waste at the source. The color-coded system makes waste segregation uniform, thus enabling easy management of waste at all levels.
2bin1bag -“Divide and Conquer waste” initiative by Karnataka government has helped in the systematic collection and disposal of garbage in the BBMP limits of the city. This system has helped eliminate the roadside dumping of mixed waste. The gram panchayats are now adopting the same initiative to help with mounting piles of mixed garages in the vicinity.

Our roads currently look like the picture on the left. The streets can be like the picture on the right with our collective efforts and following the “2bin1bag” segregation method at the source. The dirty laundry sits in a designated basket making it visually easy to see and act.
Waste segregation is as easy as walking when we follow the “2bin1bag” method. The uncomplicated learning curve will help build a strong muscle memory.
Why to follow
Non-Segregated and Mixed waste are mostly dumped and contribute to landfills. Methane produced by waste from landfill sites can cause explosions and fires.
Landfills are mostly responsible for the contamination of soil and groundwater, as the contaminating materials that the stored waste may contain can spread to the soil and water near the plant.
With the government making stringent rules on garbage dumping, the garbage collectors are now dumping on the roadsides and vacant plots in and around electronic city and surrounding areas. Adopting the 2binandbag method of segregation will divert 80% of garbage collected towards recycling and composting and only a marginal waste would go to the landfills.
