Ever wondered why a warm bowl of soup feels so comforting on a rainy or an extremely tired day as you sit in your cosy living room and watch your favourite TV show?
Or why do you crave chocolates when you’re stressed? It’s not just your stomach talking; your brain is the main hero in action here.

The human mind and food and your body have a fascinating relationship, one that’s as complex as a gourmet meal. It’s like a secret friendship, where your taste buds and your thoughts are in constant communication.

Cravings: The Mind’s Secret Language
Cravings are like the mind’s way of saying, “Hey, I’m feeling a bit off. Can you help me out?” When you’re stressed, for example, your brain might crave sugary treats to give you a quick energy boost. It’s like your mind’s way of saying, “I need a sweet treat to feel better.”

Comfort Food: The Mind’s Warm Hug
Comfort food is like a warm hug from your mother, but in edible form. It’s your brain’s way of saying, “My Dearie, Everything’s going to be okay.”

Think about it: when you’re feeling down, what’s the first thing you crave? Probably something warm, comforting and familiar from Amma’s kitchen? It’s like your mind is trying to soothe your emotions with a fresh delicious plate of your favourite comfort food. I simply love hot steaming rice with my all-time favourite hot hot steaming mixed vegetable sambar and deeply roasted and spicy and steamy potato fry and some Appalams.

Food and Memories: A Taste of the Past
Food is also a powerful memory trigger. Just one bite can transport you back in time, bringing up vivid memories of childhood, vacations, or special occasions or even special people. It’s like your brain is using food as a time machine, allowing you to relive the past in a delicious way. Whenever I see traditional south Indian bhakshanam like kai murukku, uppu seedai, vella seedai, thattai, thenkuzhal, kadalai urundai, mysore pak etc, I am always reminded of my childhood days where my Amma and Paati would always keep making one bhakshanam after another regularly at our huge family home kitchen because our ancestral family home back in Chennai was always swarming with relatives and cousins.

The Future of Food and the Mind
As our understanding of the food-mind-body connection grows, so too does our ability to harness the power of food. Today, we have so much information on how to breakdown the food on our plate in the form of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals and eat. From using food to improve mood and cognitive function to developing personalised nutrition plans, the future of food and the mind is exciting and full of possibilities. So, the next time you’re enjoying a delicious meal, do take a moment to appreciate the complex and interesting relationship between your mind and your taste buds. It’s a fascinating journey that’s as delicious as it is enlightening.
