Shri Krishna Mahila & Bala Vikas Seva Charitable Trust, Bengaluru, has launched UDAAN – Fly Free, a menstrual hygiene awareness initiative aimed at empowering women and breaking taboos surrounding menstruation. Founded by Manisha Rane and Mayuri Joshi, the project sheds light on the critical gaps in menstrual health in India—where only 12% of women have access to sanitary pads, and just 1 in 3 rural women use them.
The campaign not only highlights the health challenges women face—like cramps, itching, mood swings, and sleepless nights—but also tackles the environmental impact of disposable pads. A staggering 12.3 billion pads are discarded annually, taking 250–800 years to decompose.
UDAAN advocates for the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives like menstrual cups, which are chemical-free, reusable, and safe for both the body and the planet. Through step-by-step guidance on usage and maintenance, the project encourages a shift toward sustainable menstrual practices.
With UDAAN – Fly Free, the Trust hopes to bring about a transformation in menstrual hygiene awareness, promoting health, dignity, and environmental responsibility for women across India.
