Mental health has long been a neglected area in Indian population and talking about it, is considered as a taboo. But as we are progressing as an educated and aware society it becomes important to talk about our mental health in terms of understanding of the concept and accessibility of the services. We may find multiple complex definitions across various sources but as a practicing psychologist and therapist how I understand and would want to explain mental health is, as an index of overall well-being that guides our thoughts, emotions and in turn our actions in a productive and functional way for both self and the people around. Anything that hinders this process of functionality needs attention and proper remedy. The reasons can be ranging from everyday stresses about job, relationship, parenting, family, low self esteem, student life, personality, decision making etc. or clinical conditions like major depression or anxiety.
The moment we realise that we are no longer able to manage these issues on our own and they have started affecting our everyday functioning in terms of our thoughts, emotions and actions, that is the time we decide to consult a professional who is trained to address our mental health concerns and intervene with a professional and empathetic approach. That's where we have psychologists, therapists, and psychiatrists. Let us not hesitate to consult one for addressing these concerns because mental health has to be given a Priority. We all deserve a better quality of life.
Don't we?
