Bengaluru is set for a major transformation in its sports infrastructure with the Karnataka government floating a ₹943 crore tender to build an 80,000-seat international cricket stadium in Anekal. The project, led by the Karnataka Housing Board, will be developed on nearly 75 acres as part of a larger multi-sport complex and is expected to be completed within 36 months.
The proposed stadium aims to address the growing pressure on the existing M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, which has limited capacity and logistical constraints for large-scale events. Officials envision the new venue as a world-class facility capable of hosting international matches, IPL games, concerts, and year-round events, thereby strengthening Bengaluru’s position as a global sports hub.
The push for a new stadium gained urgency following past crowd management challenges in the city, highlighting the need for larger, better-planned venues outside dense urban zones.
However, the project has also sparked debate. Industry leaders like Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw have raised concerns about inadequate road and metro connectivity to Anekal, warning that infrastructure gaps could impact the stadium’s long-term viability.
Despite these concerns, the project is expected to boost development in South Bengaluru, particularly around Electronic City, driving real estate growth, employment opportunities, and improved urban infrastructure in the coming years.
