BUDDHA
Happiness could mean different things to different people. For some a simple meal can bring in happiness, while for another a shopping spree gives happiness. Whatever may be the act, there is one open secret: in today’s modern changing times, happiness needs to be nurtured and cultivated. Actually it is futile to seek happiness from external sources, because it is something that is already present in us — we just have to become aware of it and experience it from within. Happiness is not something readymade; it comes from our own actions. Little pleasures of life can give us happiness and make us feel at peace. Happiness is that which provides inner peace to a person’s mind and soul.
Then why in today’s rat race happiness has taken a backseat? We have shelved happiness for tomorrow. In our craze and chase of materialistic possessions, ‘the happiness quotient’ in our lives has gone for a walk. Happiness will seldom knock the doors of those who fail to appreciate what they already have.
We get obsessed with petty problems and expect others to make us happy. Once we learn to transcend mundane challenges and cease to believe that the source of happiness is from other people, we discover that all along, we had this treasure trove of happiness right inside us. We just didn’t realize it earlier!
But happiness can be easily achieved even in today’s fast-track life. The famous aphorism by Mahatma Gandhi comes in here: Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony. We don’t have to tread far in our search for the happiness quotient.
Everything we do is part of our life. Happiness is about seeking balance across all areas of our lives – recognizing that EVERYTHING in our lives is co-related. Once we realize this and make a fervent effort to be happy from within we will be a transmitter of happiness to all those around us. What you give is what you get — give suffering, and get suffering in return, give happiness, and receive happiness in return. We must make a conscious effort to boost our Happiness Quotient from within and exude happiness all around us. We will then see the world with new eyes. No one is free from problems and challenges. In the journey of life we pass through many assessments. Life has its own ups and downs. But only we can decide whether we wish to be happy or miserable.
