PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) to PMOS: (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome)
Did you know that many women diagnosed with PCOS may never actually develop ovarian cysts? It is actually funny that the leading global cause of irregular menstruation and a major cause of infertility was named incorrectly for 91 years.
Recently, research conducted by Prof. Helena Teede of Monash University, Australia and 56 organizations conducted a study for 11 years, with the help of 22 thousand plus clinicians and patients and after cross-cultural appropriateness PCOS was renamed PMOS.
The name was suggested because the condition is not only related to ovaries but also strongly connected to metabolism, hormones, insulin resistance and overall health. The new term better reflects the real nature of the disorder and helps spread awareness that it affects the entire body, not just reproductive health.
This encourages early diagnosis, holistic treatment and a broader understanding of women's health, empowering women to focus on complete wellness rather than just ovarian symptoms.
