On 24th Sep, 2026, under the leadership of Urban Development Minister Mr. Krishna Byre Gowda, Stakeholder Consultation on Solid Waste Management was organized by BSWML and GBA. It witnessed more than 150 participants including Stalwart Organizations working in SWM field from all over Bengaluru. There was discussion, ideation and a clear intent to drive to solutions. Krishna Byre Gowda Sir was quite open in acknowledging the pain points in the current system. He wanted to listen to ideas from citizens.
The citizens who attended were invited to join one of the five discussion groups, discuss and present their points in terms of short-term, mid-term and long-term solutions. The groups were: Improving Household Collection, Exploring Effective Waste Management Solutions, Monitoring, Framework for Volunteer Participation, Information, Education and Communication (IEC)
Being an Environment educator and a firm believer of the immense role of communication, I joined IEC group. A total of 80+ points were discussed as solutions to different problems in Solid Waste Management. Few of the solutions were decentralized wet waste management, a one app solution for dry waste disposal, multilingual approach for outreaching, making it mandatory by the Government for BAFs/ Schools/ Religious Institutions/ Corporates to organize awareness sessions and ensure that SWM mandate is followed by taking different measures.
Each team was heard patiently by the Minister and there was an assurance that the points will be reviewed and put into action wherever possible. Each team will send a detailed draft of the action points to the Ministry shortly
