- Uterine fibroids are non cancerous growths of the uterus that are mostly seen in the reproductive age group. Hormones such as estrogen and progesterone stimulate the development of fibroids in some women. Not all fibroids are symptomatic, some of them are incidentally found on scans. Heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, infertility, and urinary and bowel disturbances are a few of the symptoms of fibroid uterus. Very rarely, fibroids become cancerous. All fibroids need not be removed. Size, position and symptoms determine removal.
