Let’s celebrate Ganesha Chaturthi by preparing Lord Ganesha’s favorite snack, Modak. Here we go!

For the Outer Shell (Rice Flour Dough):
For the Outer Shell (Rice Flour Dough):
- 1 cup rice flour
- 1 cup water
- A pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon ghee (clarified butter)
Ingredients for Modak:
For the Sweet Filling:
- 1 cup grated coconut
- 1 cup jaggery (or sugar if jaggery is not available)
- 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
- A pinch of salt
Instructions:
For the Sweet Filling:
For the Sweet Filling:
- Heat a pan and add the grated coconut and jaggery (or sugar) to it.
- Cook on low heat, stirring continuously, until the jaggery melts and combines with the coconut. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the cardamom powder and a pinch of salt to the mixture. Mix well and cook for a couple more minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
- Remove the sweet coconut filling from the heat and let it cool down.
For the Outer Shell (Rice Flour Dough):
- In a separate saucepan, heat 1 cup of water along with a pinch of salt and 1 teaspoon of ghee.
- Once the water starts boiling, reduce the heat to low and add the rice flour. Quickly stir the mixture to combine the rice flour with the water.
- Continue stirring and cooking the dough on low heat until it comes together and forms a smooth, pliable dough. This should take about 2-3 minutes.
- Remove the dough from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes until it’s comfortable to touch.
Shaping the Modaks:
- Take a small portion of the rice flour dough and roll it into a smooth ball.
- Flatten the ball into a small disc using your fingers or a rolling pin. Make the edges thinner than the center, creating a small cup shape.
- Place a spoonful of the sweet coconut-jaggery mixture into the center of the rice flour disc.
- Carefully gather the edges of the disc and pinch them together to form a closed, dumpling-like shape. Ensure there are no cracks.
Steaming the Modaks:
- Prepare a steamer and place the modaks on a greased plate or steamer tray.
- Steam the modaks for about 10-12 minutes or until they become translucent and the outer shell looks glossy.
- Remove the modaks from the steamer and let them cool slightly before offering them to Lord Ganesha.
Offer these Modaks to Lord Ganesha, seek His blessings, and wish you and your family a joyful and Happy Ganesha Chaturthi!!!
