Adi Shankara's Social Initiative: Empowering Women and Children Through Self-Defense Training
- Sep 15th, 2024
In a unique and socially impactful move, Adi Shankara, a team of young students from Pragathi Nagar, organized an awareness session focused on self-defense and emergency response training during Ganesh Chaturthi, a time typically reserved for music, dance, and cultural celebrations. This initiative, aimed specifically at women and children, was held at Shri Varasiddhi Vinayaka Temple, Pragathi Nagar, in collaboration with Rani Chennamma Pade and the Electronic City Police. The event saw an overwhelming response, with more than 250 participants actively taking part.
The event’s primary objective was to equip women with the skills needed to protect themselves in times of danger and emergencies. This thoughtful approach by the young boys of Adi Shankara was highly appreciated by the community. The session was inaugurated by Mr. Anjanappa M, former BBMP member from Begur Ward, with Mr. Prakash Gowda serving as the chief patron. The program was greatly supported by Mr. Naveen GM, Police Inspector of Electronic City Police Station, who played a significant role in making the event a success, despite the festival’s busy schedule.
Under the mentorship and coordination of Shubhankar, a young advocate known for his experience in organizing socially relevant programs, the event was conducted with precision and passion. Shubhankar has been a guiding force for the Adi Shankara team, providing them with innovative ideas and a strong sense of responsibility towards societal welfare.
The event also had the support of SMSC Trust and Neo Hospital, further underlining the community’s collective commitment. During the session, participants had the opportunity to engage in practical demonstrations led by Rani Chennamma Pade, which gave the women hands-on experience in self-defense techniques.
In addition to the training, Shubhankar highlighted the importance of forming a Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA) in Pragathi Nagar. He emphasized that unity within the community is key to effectively addressing local grievances and representing their interests before authorities. Drawing parallels to India’s colonial past, he noted that external interference can be minimized if residents collectively resolve their internal issues.
This initiative by Adi Shankara has set a commendable example of social responsibility, proving that festivals can also be platforms for empowering communities.
