Cracked NEET at 49: Naidu Bhai’s Real-Life Story & Tips

Contributor,
Nagbhushan Naidu

This is a real story of Naidu Bhai B.A.M.S. who qualified NEET at age 49 and secured a B.A.M.S. seat at S.A.Ningoji Ayurvedic Medical College, Koppal, Karnataka, in NEET 2024. Motivated by his son Rohit, who was confident his father could crack NEET, Naidu applied on the last day and studied only for 3 days using NCERT books and a comprehensive K-CET objective book. Despite a 30-year academic gap, he succeeded with key chapter revision and mocks. His experience at the centre resembled Munna Bhai MBBS—invigilators mistook him for staff, and even students stood up thinking he was an invigilator. He shares tips for students with limited time who still wish to qualify NEET.

Effective Strategies for Aspiring Medical Students

  1. Anchoring Yourself to the Right Resources: NCERT books form the foundation of NEET preparation, as over 90% of the questions come from them. Delve into past year questions to identify high-yield topics, and use visual tools like flowcharts and formula sheets to enhance retention. Stick to trusted resources to avoid confusion.
  2. Understanding the NEET Exam Pattern: NEET consists of 180 MCQs: Biology (90 questions), Physics (45 questions), and Chemistry (45 questions). Each question carries 4 marks, with a 1-mark penalty for incorrect answers. In the exam, attempt Biology first as it is relatively easier, followed by Chemistry, and finish with Physics to effectively manage time.
  3. Setting Realistic Goals: Break down the syllabus into manageable sections, and allocate specific time frames for each. Focus on high-yield topics to maximize your performance.
  4. Creating a Study Plan: A structured daily study schedule is essential. Dedicate specific hours to each subject and ensure all topics are covered within the allocated time. Include short breaks to prevent burnout and stay productive.
  5. Prioritizing High-Weightage Topics: Focus on important topics such as Genetics, Human Physiology, Ecology, and Evolution (Biology); Mechanics, Electrodynamics, and Modern Physics (Physics); and Organic Chemistry, Chemical Bonding, and Thermodynamics (Chemistry).
  6. Utilizing Quality Study Materials: NCERT books should be your main source of study. For advanced understanding, refer to books like Trueman’s Biology, Objective Biology by Dinesh (Biology); Concepts of Physics by H.C. Verma, Objective Physics by D.C. Pandey (Physics); and Physical Chemistry by O.P. Tandon, Organic Chemistry by Morrison and Boyd (Chemistry).
  7. Practicing Previous Years’ Papers: Solving past years’ papers helps understand the exam pattern and difficulty level, while also aiding in time management and identifying weak areas.
  8. Taking Mock Tests: Regular mock tests simulate the actual exam environment and build confidence. Analyze your performance, identify mistakes, and work on improving speed and accuracy.
  9. Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle: Ensure a balanced diet, proper hydration, and adequate sleep to maintain energy levels and focus. A nutritious diet will keep your energy sustained, which is essential for effective preparation.

Final Note

Preparing for NEET in a short time needs dedication, smart planning, right materials, and a healthy routine. Stay focused, stay positive, follow the strategies above—and give your best. Good luck!
