The recent torrential rain from 18th May till the morning of 20th May, 2025, was a misery unleashed on the hapless citizens of Bangalore. There was loss of life and property as well. The rains were not expected early, as the actual date for the monsoon was predicted around June 01. Thus, Bangalore was just not prepared to welcome early rains.
Our civic authorities are entirely to be blamed for the state of infrastructure woes. You may ask why?
Well, the answer lies in forecasting, planning, and executing a system that brings a semblance of normalcy rather than face hardship each passing year of the fury the rains bring in. It is no rocket science to predict what needs to be done, especially the woes of the previous years’ data, which could be used for the monsoon action plan . Unfortunately, we live in an era of misplaced priorities.
The casual attitude of the authorities has to be improved. It is a well-known fact that lake beds have since been misused by the builders fraternity. Another issue that pertains is the storm water drains. It should have been desilted even before the anticipation of monsoons. The authorities should have done tree surveys so that weak roadside trees are handled with care. This year, the Electronic City flyover was a subject of public criticism, as the down ramps on either end were unfit for use. It is sheer waste of tax payers money, if a resource is under utilized, as in the above case and totally unutilised, as is evident of the Namma metro Yellow line, still being a non-starter
It is the same story repeating year after year. The city implements a few fire fighting measures, and everything is forgotten till the next monsoon, bringing back another year of monsoon misery to be encountered.
“There should be a vision and a concerted action plan by all agencies to tackle this problem, and thereby make life smoother for Bangaloreans in the years to come.”
