It was established by the Ministry of Education (erstwhile Ministry of Human Resource Development) in 1989. Procedure to apply for NIOS

From the year 2010-11, NIOS has introduced 100% Online admission in order to facilitate learners in registering themselves with it. Off-line admission quota has been dispensed with. Under this scheme learners have the options to

  1. register themselves Online directly
  2. may visit their nearest AI (study center)/Facilitation Centre and take their help for Online registration.
  3. may visit their Regional Centre for online-registration.

In order to facilitate admission, provision of on-line admission throughout the year 24×7 has been made.
