The Government of Karnataka has introduced the Gruha Jyoti free power program, which has led to concerns about a significant increase in electricity prices of Rs 2.89 per unit for those using more than 200 units per month. Understanding the components of an electricity bill is important. The bill consists of fixed charges (FC), energy charges (EC), fuel adjustment charges (FAC), and an additional security deposit (ASD). Under the previous structure, charges were based on consumption slabs. The new structure simplifies the tariff, with fixed charges of 110 and energy charges of 4.75 per unit for 0-100 units. For consumption above 100 units, the fixed charge is 210 and the energy charge is 7 per unit. For instance, let’s consider a scenario where a household consumes 201 units of electricity. Under the new tariff structure, their bill would include the fixed charge of Rs 210 along with the energy charge of Rs 7 per unit for the total consumption of 201 units.
