Summer Pet Safety Tips

Don’t get carried away with the unseasonal rains of Bangalore, The summer is here and it’s gonna last for a good 2 more months.
Pets have to be taken utmost care during summers, here are a few tips and solutions to take care of your pets during this unbearable summer.
It’s important to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion in pets, such as excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, collapse, seizures, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting.
Signs of overheating
Excessive Panting
Dry or brightly colored gums
Thick saliva
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Unstable or unsteady legs

To identify dehydration in your dog, you can check the elasticity of its skin. Simply pull a small amount of skin on your dog’s back and release it. If the skin takes too long to snap back to its original position, it may indicate dehydration.
In addition, a body temperature above 104 degrees Fahrenheit can also be a symptom.
Ensure that your pet has constant access to fresh and clean water indoors, and remember to bring a water bottle for your furry friend when heading outdoors. During warmer months, it may be beneficial to switch to wet dog food to increase their fluid intake. It’s important to keep your pet shaded as much as possible, despite their love for sunbathing, as direct sunlight can cause overheating, especially in dogs, and potentially result in heat stroke.
If you have a dog, limit their walks and exercise to the cooler times of the day, such as early morning or late evening. Avoid walking them during the hottest part of the day. When outside, make sure to take frequent breaks in shaded areas and have water readily available for your pet.
While many pets enjoy going for car rides, they would not appreciate being left in a parked car where temperatures can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Although it may seem harmless to leave your pet in a car for a brief period, it can take less than 10 minutes for dogs and cats to develop heat stroke in such conditions
To control the temperature during periods of extreme heat, it is advisable to switch on the air conditioning. Additionally, if a dog or other pet is present in the room, turn on a fan to ensure adequate ventilation. For dogs with thick fur, it is important to groom them regularly as their thick coat can make them feel even warmer during the summer months.
If you are seeking ways to keep your pets cool during the summer season without air conditioning, a cooling mat may be a viable solution. However, it’s essential to ensure that the mat is durable enough to withstand the nails of your pets, or alternatively, trim your pet’s nails before placing them on the mat.
Fruits to be shared with your fur buddy in summers
Watermelon (without the seeds & rinds)
Blueberries
Strawberries
Apples (without the seeds)
Mangoes
Tender Coconut & Water
With a high water content to keep them well-hydrated and provide balanced nutrition. Incorporating foods such as buttermilk or curd can also be an excellent summer food option for pets.

How to take care of your street friends during summer.
To prevent dehydration in streeties during hot weather, ensure that they always have access to fresh water. Consider using terracotta bowls as they tend to remain cooler than other materials, and adding a cool stone to the bowl can help keep the water cool for longer. It’s important to clean and change the water regularly to avoid waterborne infections, and it’s best to avoid using extremely chilled water.
It is advisable to refrain from leaving milk for streeties during the summer months as it can spoil quickly in the heat.
It’s important to keep an eye out for signs of paw burns in streeties who walk on hot streets during summer. If you notice any signs of burns, it’s important to treat them promptly. Begin by washing the affected paws with antibacterial soap and rinsing them thoroughly. Use a clean towel to pat the area dry. Apply an antiseptic solution such as betadine to the burned or blistered paws and allow it to dry. To protect the affected area from further damage and aid in the healing process, consider putting soft baby socks on the burnt paws. If the burn is severe, seek veterinary care for the animal.
If you notice your streeties experiencing difficulty breathing and unusual head movements, it could be a sign of heat stroke. To cool them down, pour room temperature water over their body, wipe them with a damp towel, and seek immediate veterinary care to prevent further harm.
During hot weather, animals may seek shelter under parked cars due to the lack of shaded areas. However, this can be dangerous as they may not realize when the car is about to move. Pets suffering from dehydration or heat exhaustion may be too weak to move, making it crucial to check under your car before opening the door to prevent any accidents.
During the summer, birds can find ample food in the wild, but it’s still helpful to scatter fresh seeds for them and provide a source of clean water. If you have a birdbath or water bowl, make sure to clean it frequently and keep it filled with fresh water as birds rely on it.
