World No Tobacco Day: A Call to Quit for a Healthier Future

World No Tobacco Day, observed annually on May 31, raises awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and advocates for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. Initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1987, this day highlights the global health risks associated with tobacco and encourages users to quit.

Tobacco use is a leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide, responsible for more than 8 million deaths each year. It is linked to numerous health issues, including heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and various cancers. Secondhand smoke also poses significant health risks to non-smokers, particularly children and pregnant women.

This year’s theme focuses on “Commit to Quit,” urging individuals to take steps towards a tobacco-free life. Quitting tobacco not only improves personal health but also benefits public health and the environment. Support systems such as counselling, hotlines, and cessation programs are crucial in helping users overcome addiction.

Tips to Reduce the Urge:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink water to help manage cravings.
  2. Stay Active: Exercise regularly to reduce stress and distract from cravings.
  3. Chew Gum or Hard Candy: Keeps your mouth busy.
  4. Avoid Triggers: Identify and avoid situations that trigger the urge to smoke.
  5. Deep Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises to relax.
  6. Seek Support: Join a support group or talk to friends and family about your quitting journey.
  7. Use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT): Consider patches, gum, or lozenges as advised by a healthcare professional.
On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) 2024, the Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL), Ministry of Education, launched an Implementation Manual of Tobacco Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI) at New Delhi today in collaboration with Socio Economic and Educational Development Society (SEEDS). This year’s WNTD theme is “Protecting children from tobacco industry interference”. The newly launched manual has been designed in line with the theme.
