BENGALURU: The State government’s decision to expand the jurisdiction of the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) across the entire Bengaluru Urban district will bring several areas of South Bengaluru, including parts of Anekal and Bengaluru South taluks, into a unified water and sewerage planning framework.
In Bengaluru South Taluk, all five hoblis listed in the district classification have villages that are either partly or fully outside the present Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) limits. They are Kengeri, Uttarahalli-1, Uttarahalli-2, Uttarahalli-3 and Uttarahalli-4.
The situation is particularly significant in Anekal Taluk, where the three identified hoblis — Sarjapura-1, Sarjapura-2 and Sarjapura-3 — are classified as outside the GBA. This means large areas around the rapidly developing Anekal-Sarjapur belt currently fall beyond the GBA municipal boundary, even though they form part of Bengaluru Urban district.
The BWSSB’s expanded jurisdiction is expected to cover planning, implementation, operation and maintenance of drinking-water supply systems, underground drainage networks and sewage-treatment infrastructure in the newly added areas.
The move is intended to bring water and sewerage services under a single agency across Bengaluru Urban district as development spreads beyond existing municipal boundaries.
The classification also underlines an important distinction: the Bengaluru Urban district boundary and GBA municipal boundary are not the same. For South Bengaluru, this distinction is especially relevant to fast-growing areas around Anekal, Sarjapura, Kengeri and Uttarahalli, where civic infrastructure is increasingly required to support expanding residential and commercial development.
