We never knew it was childhood
When cartoons were morning plans,
When every friend was forever
And every goodbye wasn’t for long.
Childhood never told me
That toys would gather dust,
And promises of “always”
Would sometimes turn to “Just”.
There is a photograph of me
Somewhere in an old drawer—
Hair untidy,
Knees dusty.
A smile too wide for my face,
And absolutely no idea
What tomorrow meant.
We never knew it was childhood
When birthdays meant one more year,
When growing up sounded exciting
And adulthood seemed so near.
And now I look at that little girl,
And wish I had known back then---
That childhood doesn’t say goodbye.
It simply slips away,
Leaving us to find it
In photographs, old laughter.
And the memories, we never knew we’d miss.
